Gentianella germanicaPosted by Johan Dierckx (Wijnegem, Belgium) on 11 October 2012 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio. Gentianella germanica (NL: Duitse gentiaan / EN: Chiltern gentian / DE: Deutscher Fransenenzian / FR: Gentiane d’Allemagne) is a 15-35 cm high flowering plant in the Gentianaceae family. In Belgium this species is on the red list mentioned very rare and endangered. The gentian is found in central Europe and most of Western Europe in grasslands, fens, prairies, meadows, pastures and sheep pastures at altitudes up to 2600 meters. It prefers loamy, calcareous soil. It flowers from August to November with lilac blue sometimes white flowers measuring 2 to 3.5 cm. There are usually 5 petals. The stem bears mostly multiple flowers. The flowers are pollinated by bees.
