Spiranthes aestivalis

Series: European Terrestrial Orchids

Spiranthes aestivalis (NL: Zomerschroeforchis / EN: Summer Lady’s-tresses / DE: Sommer-Drehwurz, Sommerwendelorchis, Sommerwendelähre / FR: Spriranthe d’été) is a species of orchid that has declined sharply throughout north-west Europe. It once occured in Belgium but due to changes in habitat it has become extinct for many years now.
The delicate, pure white flower spikes are arranged on the stem in a spiral pattern and during flowering it has several long, narrow leaves at the base of the stem. It is one of the most delicate flowers I have ever seen and finally finding this species after several years of studying European orchids was a real delight.
