Cypripedium calceolus (NL: Vrouwenschoentje, Venusschoentje / EN: Lady's-slipper orchid / DE: Gelbe Frauenschuh, Gelb-Frauenschuh, Marienfrauenschuh, Europäischer Frauenschuh, Frauenschuh / FR: Sabot de Vénus, Sabot-de-Vénus d'Europe, Sabot de la Vierge, Soulier de Notre-Dame) is the type species of the genus Cypripedium. It is found in continental Europe growing in the decomposed humus of semi-shaded woodland cover on limestone. This is a very special plant - its form, stature and sheer beauty mark it out out as arguably Europes most impressive orchid though, unfortunately this irresistable elegance is the very thing that creates the biggest challenge to its survival. It has declined over much of the European part of its range, and as a result is legally protected in a number of countries.
