Fissidens dubius - capsules

Posted by
Johan Dierckx (Wijnegem, Belgium) on 13 March 2012 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

Series: Belgian bryophyta

Fissidens dubius (NL: Kalkvedermos / EN: Rock Pocket-moss/ DE: Kamm-Spaltzahnmoos / FR: ?) is particularly frequent on dry limestone and on calcareous drystone walls. Identification of the different species in the Fissidens genus is not easy and at least a good hand lens (x20) or a binocular is needed. Microscopical examination is needed until some experience is gained. As with many species, the key to finding this moss is to learn to recognize the habitat.
