Lycaena virgaureae - male

Lycaena virgaureae (NL: Morgenrood / EN: Scarce Copper / DE: Dukatenfalter / FR: Cuivré de la verge-d'or, Cuivré satiné) is a butterfly of the family Lycaenidae. The lower surfaces of the back wings are yellowish and have only a few black dots; there are characteristic white marks the immediate vicinity of these. The species exhibits one kind of sexual dimorphism: male butterflies (the specimen in this image) are colored bright gold-red on the upper side of wing, while the females (image comming up in a few days) have broader orange wings with a dark design. In a field full colour - flowers, butterflies, birds... - a male perched on a flower head 20 meters away will instantly catch the eye. It is a common butterfly in high mountains although it is found in lower areas less commonly. It flies in the northern half of Spain, and from the Alps eastwards and from Greece to Scandinavia.

Fabulous macro shot, what makes this stand out from the others is the attention to detail, and a neutral background which does not distract.
