Lycaena hippothoe (NL: Rode vuurvlinder / EN: Purple-edged Copper / DE: Lilagold-Feuerfalter / FR: Cuivré écarlate) is a butterfly of the family Lycaenidae.
This is exactly the same female specimen as in previous post, but this time displaying the full upperwing-coloring.
The male of this delightful species carries every colour of the rainbow on his wings. The upper wings are dark orangey red or red, with wide bluish purple streaks on the hind wing. The dark-rimmed wings have a bright purple sheen that looks spectacular in sunlight. The female (this image) looks much less colourful with predominantly brown wings, with dots on the forewing and a red belt in the lower hind wing. The undersides of the wings (see yesterdays image) are greyish-brown with a touch of orange, and with black spots. Lycaena hippothoe has a wingspan varying from 32 to 38 mm. It is a butterfly of damp flowery meadows and roadside ditches. The larva lives on Rumex acetosa and Rumex acetosella.
