Coenonympha arcania mate on Dactylorhiza maculata

Coenonympha arcania (NL: Tweekleurig hooibeestje / EN: Pearly Heath / DE: Weißbindiges Wiesenvögelchen) is a butterfly species belonging to the family Nymphalidae. The species can be found in almost every country in Central Europe. In Belgium it is a rare and endangered species which can only be found in the very south and it is a red-list species.
This pair chose an orchid - Dactylorhiza maculata (NL: Gevlekte orchis / EN: Heath spotted orchid / DE: Gefleckte Knabenkraut) - as a resting place during their mating-flight.
This orchid species is a typical orchid in acid, heathy habitats. The flowers are usually rather pale pink with delicate markings, and the lip is broad, resembling a frilled skirt. The species can occur in large numbers and gives a real splash of colour to otherwise sombre tracts of moor or bog.
Actually I was documenting on the orchid species but this pair of butterflies passing by was a very welcome bonus in the image and became the main subject here. Sometimes you have to be lucky ...
