Lomaspilis marginata

Posted by Johan Dierckx (Wijnegem, Belgium) on 13 June 2011 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio.

Lomaspilis marginata (NL: Gerande spanner / EN: Clouded Border / DE: Vogelschmeiß-Spanner) is a delicate little moth, which can be disturbed from undergrowth during the day, but whose natural flight time is at night.
Wingspan is between 30mm and 38mm. The black and white markings show considerable variation in the wild. It is fairly commonly distributed over most of Belgium, occupying woodland and moist localities, and flies between May and July. The larvae feed on sallow (Salix) and poplars (Populus), especially aspen (P. tremula).
