Centaurium maritimum

Series: "Wild flowers of Crete"

Centaurium maritimum is a small herbaceous plant with opposite elliptic leaves. The flowers are formed in the upper portions of the plant with five petals in the form a star, whitish-yellow in colour - which distinguish it from the other species of centaury. The species prefers damp locations near the sea and the edges of streams, but despite its name ('maritimum'), the plants can also be found at higher altitudes (This image was taken at an altitude of 534m !). Can be confused with Blackstonia perfoliata, but the two can be easily told apart as the latters leaves are opposite and fused to the base, while Centaurium maritimum the leaves are free.
