Euphorbia acanthothamnos

Posted by
Johan Dierckx (Wijnegem, Belgium) on 19 February 2011 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

Series: "Wild flowers of Crete"

Euphorbia acanthothamnos is a perennial, cushion-like shrub with many spiny branches which flowers from March to June.. The leaves are ellipotical and up to 2 cm long, with the bracts lik a cup. The umbel has 3-4 rays which in the year after flowering transform into spines. It is very common in stony locations and probably endemic to Greece. The name comes from the Greek meaning "thorny bush" and gives an accurate picture of the plant.

@Aubélia: Het is op grote delen van de kust een heel aspectbepalende plant. De doornen zijn vlijmscherp en maken het soms lastig om je weg te vinden ....
