Diachea leucopoda #2

Posted by
Johan Dierckx (Wijnegem, Belgium) on 3 December 2010 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

Diachea leucopoda (Witpootglinsterkopje (BE) / White-footed Slime (EN)) is a species of slime mold.
More info and general view: see yesterdays post.

This image provides a closer look at the sporangia. An individual sporangium is max. 0.6mm in diameter and between 1 and 1.5mm in hight.
(Image taken with 150mm macro + 2x Extender, natural sunlight.)
The closer you come to the species, the more the true color patterns is revealed. At first sight the sporangia seem to be overall black colored (except for the white foot of course) but when illuminated by the sun, this black color splits into all colors of the rainbow: gold, yellow, green, blue, and even red are glistening all over. Tomorrow again a little closer...

These details are amazing. I would never guess that this is from a living material - but I know it is. Fantastic macro!
