Clavaria argillacea

Clavaria argillacea (Syn: Clavaria ericetorum) (Heideknotszwam (BE) /Moor Club (EN) / Heide-Keule (DE) / ? (FR)) is a species of fungus in the Clavariaceae family.
Species of the Clavariaceae family produce basidiocarps (fruit bodies) that are either cylindrical to club-shaped or branched and coral-like. They all grow terrestrial and most (if not all) are believed to be saprotrophic (decomposing dead plant material). (Other species in this family I presented on this blog can be found here). Clavaria argillacea is a typical species of heathland and is a possible mycorrhizal associate of heather. Fruiting bodies are typically 3–5cm high and 2–8mm wide, pale dirty yellow to greenish yellow. Due to loss of suitable habitat the species has become very rare in most parts of Europe.
