Spialia sertorius

Posted by
Johan Dierckx (Wijnegem, Belgium) on 31 August 2010 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio.

Spialia sertorius (Kalkgraslanddikkopje (BE) / Red-underwing Skipper (EN) / Roter Würfel-Dickkopffalter (DE) / Hespérie des sanguisorbes (FR) ) is a very small butterfly (Winglegth: 11–13 mm.) of the family Hesperiidae. It is mainly found in Southern and Central Europe. In Belgium it is on the red list mentioned very rare. The butterfly flies from April to August depending on the location.
Just before the return home, I could not resist a final visit (for this year) to one of my favorite calcareous grasslands in the area. Lighting conditions were very bad and I did not really have the intention to make some more pictures. So I left my tripod in the car but ... at 7:20 p.m. the sun broke very weak through the thick clouds. At that moment I saw this tiny little butterfly on this Scabiosa columbaria. So I used my elbows as a tripod, made as many images as I could, and just hoped one would be sharp enough ...

Monique from Koh Samui, Thailand

Timber from Toronto, Canada

.. exquisite work dude .. brilliant technically .. and esthetically as well..
some of the finest naturalism documentary I've seen ..

@Timber: Thank you very much, Timber. This is one of the finest compliments I'd like to get from someone ... Always welcome to visit my images.

Marleen from Doesburg, Netherlands

Jij hebt lange armen...!;-)) Maar, superscherp hoor!

31 Aug 2010 8:05am

KriKridesign from Cully, Switzerland

this is amaizing how all your images seems to fly in a green paradise...

31 Aug 2010 9:52am

@KriKridesign: Maybe that is because I look for these green mini-paradises in my crowded country ... I still can find them but they are getting scarse :(
