Serapias lingua

Posted by

Series: European Terrestial Orchids

Serapias lingua (Tongue-orchid / Tongorchis) is a common species on Crete. At some places we found populations of several thousands of individuals. People who aren't familiar with terrestrial orchids will not easy recognise this species as an orchid... but it surely is !
During the night, several species of bees use the hole in the flower as a sleeping-place... I will be showing a picture of this during the next days (still have to organise all my images ....)

Photome from Uden, Netherlands

Hiro from Kyoto, Japan

Beautiful !

Nice detail on the petal, Johan. Interesting background info on the flower. Looking forward to more!

@Julie Brown: Thanks Julie ! Serapias are really hard to get a decent picture. I'm glad this one turned out very well. (You'll defenitely get more pictures on Cretan orchids and flora the next month.)

GJC from Kyoto (京都), Japan

I particularly like the composition, where you have created "contact" between different elements of the photo. Well done.

@GJC: I think this is a great comment. Thank your very much for this !

Self-Indulgence from Chicagoland, United States

The entire orchid series is stunning, as usual.
