Orchis quadripunctata f. albiflora

Posted by
Johan Dierckx (Wijnegem, Belgium) on 24 April 2010 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

Series: European Terrestial Orchids

The same species as yesterdays picture. From time to time one can find flowers completely lacking the purple colour except for the dots on the lip. These are called "forma albiflora". At one place we found a population entirely white.

Ralph from Overijssel, Netherlands

Mooi deze!

@Ralph: Dank, Ralph. De witte vormen doen het bij orchideeën altijd net iets beter .... Maar de gekleurde hebben vaak een ongelooflijk pallet in huis. Zal je de komende dagen nog wel merken.

GJC from Kyoto (京都), Japan

Beautiful delicacy.

Julie Brown from Indianapolis, United States

Nice composition, Johan.

@Julie Brown: Thanks, Julie. Making decent images of these tiny orchids in Crete is very difficult. They grow between bushes with huge thorns .... My legs are punctured by now :-))) (But still alive :-p )

daniela scharnowski from Berlin, Germany

Like little birds starting to fly next moment - beautiful!

25 Apr 2010 9:22am

@daniela scharnowski: These flowers are really small ! I overestimated the size of them while looking though the bushes... think i passed a few hundred before I saw the first one ... Afterwards I saw a few thousend .... Wonderfull region !
