Orthotrichum anomalum #3

Posted by
Johan Dierckx (Wijnegem, Belgium) on 18 March 2010 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

Series: Belgian bryophyta

Again a realy mini-world image! A detail on the capsules and calyptra of Orthotrichum anomalum (Anomalous Bristle-moss / Gesteelde haarmuts), the same tuft I showed the two previous days. After a few rainy days, the light was beautifull, so I took the opportunity to make lots of images on this atrractive moss-species. It is not uncommon in the area, but I'm sure most people just don't look at them ...

(Image made with 150mm macro + 1.4x extender in natural light.)

dang from Atlanta, United States

I think it's ready to pop. :-)

18 Mar 2010 9:43am

@dang: These are still green capsules. Before they pop they have to be red... Its like a traffic-light :-) Hope to visit them again when they are ready ...

Marleen from Doesburg, Netherlands

Julie Brown from Indianapolis, United States

You are right. Most people do not look at these organisms. You have a knack for finding them. Nice work.

19 Mar 2010 2:04am

@Julie Brown: Thanks, Julie. With my eyes and nose into the moss, I usually don't see the birds :-) thats the other side - but I can hear them ! :-)) Have a nice weekend !

Self-Indulgence from Chicagoland, United States

People don't look at a lot of things right there in front of them but at this level of detail you can be sure not many have seen this. I can imagine as a child wanting to explore this little plant for its buds and making a pretend stew of them or something! Just wonderful images of these!

19 Mar 2010 3:00am

@Self-Indulgence: I recognize my youngest son in your words ... He is 10 now ... He has seen a lot the other children haven't and his imagination with those mini's is just great :-)))
