Andrena clarkella - male

Posted by Johan Dierckx (Wijnegem, Belgium) on 20 March 2012 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio.

Andrena clarkella (NL: Zwart-rosse zandbij/ EN: Clark's Mining Bee / DE: ? / FR: ? ) is a uncommon solitary mining bee, often favouring sandy places such as heathland and usually the first Andrena species to emerge each year, sometimes being seen as early as mid-February. Due to the early emergence Willow/Sallow catkins are the main source of pollen. Females are large, bulky bees, with brown hairs on the thorax matching the colour of the scopae, and black hairs on the face. The hind tibiae are entirely yellow/orange. (see yesterday's post). Males are much smaller and a little more difficult to identify. Flies February to April.
